The fast-paced film “The Gray Man” by the directors Anthony Russo and Joe Russo has a more vivid hue than your typical shooting game that revolves around The C.I.A., a distinctly dull organization. The Russos character, who plays the lead agent dubbed Six (Ryan Gosling) is dressed in a stylish red suit that matches his nail polish. It’s the first time he is onscreen to commit an assassination. Six is fighting to protect the freedom of his fellow citizens, and not to earn his 401(k) A character is a man who was convicted of murder and was released from jail by a federal suit (played by Billy Bob Thornton) and put in a secretly operative kill squadron. He seems to be fine in the end even though he is sporting a thin layer of fatigue, which Gosling wears as the rain jacket.
The Russo’s”more is more” filmmaking ethos does not allow Gosling to explore Six’s complexity. Six’s debut film is a disaster and shatters the security of his job. As this enthralling adventure takes place across 10 countries including Thailand and Azerbaijan Six stays completely apathetic. “I understand that you’re not glib,” Thornton’s character tells his character. The same is true for everyone else in the film, an amusing, but indistinguishable flash of quipping colleagues and hilarious villains (including the villain the heavy, played by Chris Evans) and a determined cancer sufferer (Alfre Woodard) who glows “If you speak anything slightly sympathetic, I’ll behead you.”
The writers of The Gray Man – Joe Russo along with Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely, frequent collaborators on the films of the brothers have written the screenplay, which is an attack of fun with a torrent of one-liners and bullets. The razzle-dazzle does quite an amount to bring life to what is essentially the same old story. (It is not a surprise that the true villain is, as always the C.I.A. as a whole, in a narrative that includes not less than three obnoxious explosions.) However, the frenzied pace can be distracting, to the point of self-sabotage. A fight scene, in the beginning, is suffused with interspersed fireworks and smoke shots that it is a cause for concern that the Russos are unsure of Gosling’s abilities to pull off his stunts. The film is thankfully growing in confidence and creativity. In the later scenes, Six doggedly rescues himself from a falling plane as well as a trap door, and an assortment of handcuffs.
