If you’re looking for an accurate image of the current male sexiness of 1987 and beyond, you should look at John McTiernan’s Predator. A group of muscular men with bollard-style biceps and Freudian guns descend upon Central America like some kind of WWE field excursion which is the kind that would be a Royal Rumble in the jungle. It’s a massive fat testosterone milkshake of film that perfectly captures the time. Prey, follows the same basic concept (warriors in the wild being hunted by an alien) but cuts out the absurdity and seamlessly aligns the original to more contemporary aesthetics.
Six years after making his directorial debut with the brilliantly unconventional 10- Cloverfield Lane, Dan Trachtenberg is back in the spin-off world. The belated sequel to 10 Cloverfield Lane is bypassing the saga of the previous sequels by rewinding 300 years to the colonial past. In place of Arnie, as he is at his Arniest, the film features Amber Midthunder’s Naru, an incredibly skilled Comanche warrior who firmly rejects her people’s view of women’s roles and is ably supported through her chief brother Taabe (Dakota The Beavers).
The film is electrifying in every scene. Midthunder is an explosion of pure fury that imbues Naru with unshakeable resolve and brutal pragmatism. For example, a confrontation between blades of saw that are barbed and a French colonialist’s leg is terrifyingly real. Still, Patrick Aison’s films script never strips Naru of empathy nor implies a need to take on male traits to outwit and defeat any man who comes within her reach. Naru might not have the no-neck strength of Dutch’s crew; however, she’s tough and fast, slaying prey both on two legs and four using a bow, blade and tomahawk-on-a rope (genius) in an eerie symphony of choreographed chaos which wouldn’t be out of the scene on the set of John Wick Chapter 4..
Often overlooked, she’s excluded by the Predator who is unable to acknowledge that the hunting group is a single female character and is at times in awe of her as the group hunts to hunt for suitable prey. The commentaries on gender may not be subtle, but it’s clear and concise. McTiernan’s original was a showcase for slow-burn tension that taps into the claustrophobic fear of an unidentified enemy. Trachtenberg, however, is well aware that most of his audience has seen it before. This is why Prey is a gallery-based film and never hides what’s lurking in the trees. The film is robbed of the dreadful atmosphere of the first; however, the full and unveiled revelation (doused in urine blood) is a shocker with a shocking and sinister new look.
