Freelance 2023

“Freelance” is a film that barely registers on the cinematic spectrum. With a whopping $40 million budget, it manages to cobble together a semblance of a plot and recognizable stars, but the effort seems to stop there. Pierre Morel’s creation feels more like a half-hearted attempt to meet VOD and theater release requirements than a genuine piece of art. Despite featuring John Cena and Alison Brie, both inherently likable actors, as protagonists, the film fails to make them anything more than bland figures lost in the chaotic background of an attempted action-comedy.

In this uninspired work, Cena portrays Mason Pettits, a former special ops soldier with a troubled past. Teaming up with journalist Claire Wellington (Brie) on a perilous assignment, the duo stumbles into a contrived plot involving a fictional war-torn country and a presidential coup. The film lacks the essential elements—romance, comedy, and action—that could have infused life into its veins. Missing are the sparks of chemistry, believable stakes, and unexpected action beats that define a captivating film, reducing “Freelance” to a mere outline rather than a finished product.
