Dark Nature starts with a realistic and intense horror scene. Joy is preparing dinner when Derek comes home, visibly angry. Joy narrowly escapes his wrath, but the family dog is not as fortunate. Six months later, Joy, still grappling with the trauma, joins her friend Carmen on a camping trip/therapy session with other women led by Dr. Dunnely. Strange occurrences begin to unfold as the women experience flashbacks and visions related to their past traumas. Joy becomes increasingly suspicious of Dr. Dunnely and believes Derek is stalking them. As they find evidence of a predator in the area, the tension mounts. The Canadian Rockies, where the film was shot, serve as both a beautiful backdrop and a looming threat. The film expertly utilizes sound to create a sense of menace and dread. While the creature itself is a unique and eerie creation, the focus remains on exploring themes of abuse, PTSD, and guilt. Despite some character development shortcomings, Dark Nature successfully combines serious issues with a traditional creature-in-the-woods narrative, without feeling forced or overly pretentious.
